The planning and design of sustainable buildings demands the adoption of a collaborative work model. To get it right, everyone must gather around the table earlier and more often than they might ordinarily. Debate about decisions is typical. Maybe not everyone gets what they want every time. It’s a matter of trust and making the most of everyone’s talent.
The GreenSource masthead reveals something that might seem strange at first glance. Some of us are from BuildingGreen, LLC, others from Architectural Record, while others are from McGraw-Hill Construction, of which Record is a part. How does that work?
Well, GreenSource is made in a collaborative process that is similar to a well-designed sustainable building. We are separate companies that meet frequently to collaborate and create this wonderful magazine and its Web site. BuildingGreen has nearly two decades of experience publishing such vehicles as Environmental Building News and the GreenSpec Directory. The McGraw-Hill Construction team has the active participation of five of Architectural Record’s editors. Between us, we have decades of experience as practitioners in the fields of architecture and engineering, not to mention publishing
Like successful building-design teams, we trust and respect one another. We share a willingness to try new things, ambitions to improve what we make, and a desire to please our readers. It seems to work.
